Crown The Empire
Dallas, TX
Band History
Crown the Empire is an American metalcore band formed in Dallas, Texas, in 2010. The original members included Andrew “Andy Leo” Rockhold on lead vocals, Brandon Hoover on lead guitar and backing vocals, Hayden Tree on rhythm guitar and backing vocals, Devin Detar on bass, Alex Massey on drums, and Austin Duncan on keyboards. The band played their first show on July 10, 2010, at Compass Church in Colleyville, Texas. Early on, the band aimed to create a heavier sound with catchy choruses to stand out in the local music scene.
In their initial years, Crown the Empire underwent several lineup changes. Devin Detar was replaced by Brandon Shroyer, and Alex Massey was succeeded by Brent Taddie as the drummer. In 2011, Zac Johnson joined as a harsh vocalist after winning a fan contest. These changes led to the recording of their first EP, Limitless, released on November 29, 2011.
Musical Style and Influences
Crown the Empire’s music blends metalcore, post-hardcore, progressive rock, and electronic elements. Their sound features heavy guitar riffs, dynamic vocals, and electronic programming. Early influences include bands like Attack Attack! and Pierce the Veil, which shaped their initial metalcore and post-hardcore sound. Over time, they incorporated more electronic and pop elements, similar to bands like Bring Me the Horizon, allowing them to expand their musical range and appeal.
Lineup Changes and Rise to Prominence
The band’s lineup continued to evolve in the following years. In 2012, David Escamilla joined as a harsh vocalist, enhancing their vocal dynamics. That same year, Crown the Empire signed with Rise Records, leading to the release of their debut album, The Fallout, in November 2012. The album achieved commercial success, reaching number one on the Billboard Heatseekers chart.
In 2014, they released their second album, The Resistance: Rise of the Runaways, which debuted at number seven on the Billboard 200 and topped several rock charts. This period marked significant growth for the band, both in popularity and musical complexity. However, in 2015, lead guitarist Benn Suede left the band, followed by David Escamilla’s departure in 2017. These changes prompted the band to adapt, with Brandon Hoover taking over lead guitar duties and Hayden Tree focusing on bass and vocals.
Recent Years and Continued Evolution
Despite lineup changes, Crown the Empire remained active, releasing their third album, Retrograde, in 2016, which debuted at number fifteen on the Billboard 200. In 2019, they released Sudden Sky, continuing to explore new musical territories while maintaining their metalcore foundation. The band faced challenges in 2020 when guitarist Brandon Hoover tested positive for COVID-19 but recovered shortly after.
In 2021, drummer Brent Taddie left the band amicably, and Jeeves Avalos joined as the new drummer in 2022. The band released their fifth album, Dogma, in April 2023, showcasing their ongoing commitment to evolving their sound.
