San Diego metalcore band As I Lay Dying is set to release its eighth studio album, Through Storms Ahead, this Friday, November 15th, despite recent turbulence within the band. Currently, the group consists solely of vocalist Tim Lambesis, following a series of departures from key members (and thousands of non-members on social media).
This week, the band released “The Void Within,” a new track offering fans a final preview of the upcoming album. However, the recent mass exodus of band members has cast uncertainty over As I Lay Dying’s future. Guitarist/vocalist Phil Sgrosso, guitarist Ken Susi, bassist/vocalist Ryan Neff, and drummer Nick Pierce all announced their resignations in recent weeks, citing personal and ethical concerns. Susi’s statement hinted at moral struggles, stating, “…my personal morals have recently been tested to a breaking point.” Sgrosso, a longtime member, added, “…recent actions have shown that As I Lay Dying no longer offers a healthy or safe environment for anyone involved.”
Lambesis has since addressed the changes, indicating his intent to rebuild the band with a new lineup but offering few specifics. As I Lay Dying had been performing with its latest configuration since 2022. Lambesis served about two years of a six year sentence for attempting to have his ex-wife murdered.
The band’s European tour originally scheduled for this fall has been canceled in light of the departures. Nonetheless, As I Lay Dying has announced a May 16th performance at the ‘Welcome To Rockville’ festival in Daytona Beach, Florida, marking a tentative return to the live stage with a reassembled lineup. Fans now await both the release of Through Storms Ahead and news of As I Lay Dying’s next chapter.
