The Download Festival has revealed Sleep Token as one of its three headliners for next year’s event, a move that has surprised fans and sparked widespread debate. The British alternative metal band will take the stage alongside Green Day and Korn, two acts with longstanding careers and multiple accolades. In contrast, Sleep Token, who formed in 2016, only recently gained significant attention, with their third album Take Me Back To Eden achieving viral success on TikTok in 2023. This success culminated in a sold-out performance at London’s OVO Arena Wembley, underscoring their rising popularity.
While some fans celebrate the inclusion of Sleep Token as a fresh choice, critics argue that other established acts with more extensive careers may have been more fitting. Download Festival founder Andy Copping defended the decision, citing the band’s rapid rise and noting that Download has a history of elevating emerging artists to headlining slots. In a recent NME interview, Copping explained, “We’re the first major festival that’s taken the bull by the horns… it’s Sleep Token’s moment.”
This shift highlights the festival’s focus on evolving with the times, reflecting how platforms like TikTok are shaping the music landscape. Copping emphasized the importance of staying current with social media trends and audience expectations. Download has also adapted to controversies in recent years, including last year’s decision to part ways with primary sponsor Barclays after backlash over the bank’s involvement in certain international conflicts.
The 2025 Download Festival, set for June 13-15 at Donington Park in Derby, UK, will also feature Weezer, Bullet For My Valentine, and other prominent acts, aiming to balance legacy acts with the next generation of rock and metal talent.
